2026 FIU Cuba Poll
The FIU Cuba Poll, directed by Guillermo J. Grenier and Qing Lai, is the longest-running research project tracking Cuban American opinion in South Florida since 1991. The survey used a probability sample of 1,004 Cuban American adults. For a yes or no question (dichotomous variables) answered by all respondents, the maximum marge of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level, after accounting for weighting. The interviews were conducted in in English and Spanish (62.9% in Spanish) to landline and cell numbers. Results are weighted by gender, age, place of birth and year of migration to match the American Community Survey.

About the FIU Cuba Poll
First conducted in 1991, the FIU Cuba Poll is the longest-running research project tracking the opinions of the Cuban American community in South Florida. It has been conducted sixteen times between 1991 and 2026. From the beginning, Drs. Guillermo J. Grenier and Hugh Gladwin, faculty members in FIU's Department of Global & Sociocultural Studies, have directed the survey. Dr. Qing Lai joined as a co-principal investigator in 2020.
The poll was designed to measure the views of Cuban Americans about U.S. policy options toward Cuba. The consistency of some of the responses, as well as the shift in others, provides the most complete picture of Cuban American political attitudes over time.
The FIU Cuba Poll is administered to randomly selected Cuban American residents of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The sample is generated from telephone exchanges using standard random-digit-dialing procedures that ensure that each phone number has an equal chance of being chosen for the sample. Interviews are conducted with respondents who have both cell phones and landline phones. The large size of the sample allows for a complete demographic analysis of the Cuban American population in Miami-Dade County. Bilingual interviewers conduct the survey in English and Spanish.
The Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs funded the 2022 FIU Poll. The Insitute for Cuban Studies, the Institute for Public Opinion Research, the Center for Labor Research and Studies, the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies, the College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts, and the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center have cosponsored the FIU Cuba Poll in the past. The Brookings Institution, the Cuba Study Group, the Ford Foundation, The Miami Herald, NBC 6, the Open Society Foundations, the Christopher Reynolds Foundation, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and the Trimpa Group have previously funded the poll.
